6 Home Remedies for Knee Pain

Home Remedies for Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common and frustrating issue that occurs in thousands of different people for various reasons. You might find that you have trouble with your knees because of prior injury, or because you place a lot of strain on your joints when running or cycling. Other people suffer from knee pain as a response to the onset of arthritis, or as a result of constant wear and tear.

One of the best ways to fight back against knee pain is to use a knee compression sleeve to help improve circulation in the muscles around the joint, and support the knee during further movement. However, there are also plenty of easy home remedies for knee pain that you can use to supplement your recovery.

1.    Cold Compress

Some of the best home remedies for knee pain are also the simplest. For instance, applying a cold compress to an achy joint can help to fight back against pain and swelling. The cold reduces blood flow to the affected area by constricting the blood vessels, which helps to offer some relief from unwanted pain. All you need is to wrap a handful of ice cubes up in a towel and press them against your knee until the pain subsides. Just remember not to place ice directly on the skin.

2.    Turmeric

Another of many great home remedies for knee pain is turmeric. Turmeric is full of a chemical known as curcumin, that has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties ideal for reducing discomfort. What's more studies have begun to indicate that Turmeric can help to slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Simply take one turmeric supplement capsule twice a day, or try boiling a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of milk.

Disclaimer - as turmeric can thin the blood, these remedies are not suitable for people taking blood-thinning medication.

3.    Apple Cider Vinegar

Another great option for reducing joint pain is apple cider vinegar. Thanks to the alkalizing effect of this kitchen favorite, apple cider vinegar is helpful for dissolving the build-up of harmful toxins and minerals that can begin to gather in the knee joint. At the same time, it helps to restore natural lubrication to the joints so as to promote better mobility. Simply mix two teaspoons of apple-cider vinegar into two cups of filtered water and sip until your pain disappears.

4.    Lemon

Lemon may not be the first thing you think of when coming up with home remedies for knee pain, but it's actually more effective than you might imagine. Numerous studies have found lemon to be a beneficial option for soothing joint pains caused by arthritis. The citric acid found in lemon helps to dissolve the uric acid crystals which are sometimes responsible for certain types of arthritis. Cut a couple of lemons into chunks and wrap them in a cloth dipped in sesame seed oil, then place the cloth on the joint for five to ten minutes.

5.    Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin - a substance that works similarly to pain relievers like aspirin. The natural pain-relieving properties of capsaicin are great in home remedies for knee pain, as they produce a gentle warming sensation that helps to promote healing. Make a mixture of cayenne pepper and warm olive oil and apply the paste to the affected area a couple of times a day for at least a week. You can even get over-the-counter capsaicin topical gels to help reduce knee pain if you don't feel like making the remedy yourself.
